چکیده

The FRBR [Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records], released by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions in 1998, generalizes and refines current practices and theory in library cataloging, presenting a compelling natural ontology of entities, attributes, and relationships for representing the “bibliographic universe”. The FRBR framework is extremely influential and increasingly accepted as a conceptual foundation for cataloging practice and technology in libraries and elsewhere. XML documents as defined in the W3C XML 1.0 specification, are now an important part of this bibliographic universe and it is natural to ask to which of FRBR’s “Group 1” entities does the XML document correspond. Curiously, there seem to be conflicting arguments for assigning the XML document to either of the two plausible entity categories: manifestation and expression. We believe these difficulties illuminate both the nature of the FRBR entities, and the nature of markup. We explore a conjecture that an XML document has a double aspect and that whether it is a FRBR manifestation or a FRBR expression depends upon context and intention. Such a double-aspected nature would not only be consistent with previous arguments that the meaning of XML markup varies in “illocutionary force” according to context of use, but might also help resolve an old puzzle in the humanities computing community as to whether markup is “part of” the text [buzzetti02]. However, there are alternative resolutions to explore as well and we seem to still be some distance from a full understanding of the issues. An XML document corresponds to which FRBR Group 1 entity?

At Extreme 2003 a “late breaking” presentation by members of the UIUC/GSLIS Electronic Publishing Research group argued that XML Documents could not be assigned to either of the two plausible FRBR entity classes, manifestation or expression, since XML Documents appear to both have and lack some characteristics of each class. A “double aspect” theory was proposed where a single XML Document can ...

Apply Uncertainty in Document-Oriented Database (MongoDB) Using F-XML

As moving to big data world where data is increasing in unstructured way with high velocity, there is a need of data-store to store this bundle amount of data. Traditionally, relational databases are used which are now not compatible to handle this large amount of data, so it is needed to move on to non-relational data-stores. In the current study, we have proposed an extension of the Mongo...

An XML-Based Representational Document Format for FRBR

Metadata related to cultural items such as movies, books and music is a valuable resource that currently is exploited in many applications and services based on mashup and linked data. Unfortunately, existing metadata formats do not have the semantics needed for versatile integration and reuse of such information across domains and applications. The conceptual model in the Functional Requiremen...

Application of the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) to Music

This paper describes work applying the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) model to music, as the basis for implementing a fully FRBRcompliant music digital library system. A detailed analysis of the FRBR and Functional Requirements for Authority Data (FRAD) entities and attributes is presented. The paper closes with a discussion of the ways in which FRBR is gaining adoptio...
